چکیده

Copper monocrystals were subjected to shock compression at pressures of 10-60 GPa by a short (3 ns initial) duration laser pulse. Transmission electron microscopy revealed features consistent with previous observations of shock-compressed copper, albeit at pulse durations in the us regime. The results suggest that the defect structure is generated at the shock front. A mechanism for dislocation generation is presented, providing a realistic prediction of dislocation density as a function of pressure. The threshold stress for deformation twinning in shock compression is calculated from the constitutive equations for slip, twinning, and the Swegle-Grady relationship.

Characterization of Plastic Deformation Induced by Microscale Laser Shock Peening

Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) is used to investigate crystal lattice rotation caused by plastic deformation during high-strain rate laser shock peening in single crystal aluminum and copper sample on ~11̄0! and (001) surfaces. New experimental methodologies are employed which enable measurement of the in-plane lattice rotation under approximate plane-strain conditions. Crystal lattice ...

Shock Compression of Monocrystalline Copper: Atomistic Simulations

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to model the effects of shock compression on [001] and [221] monocrystals. We obtained the Hugoniot for both directions, and analyzed the formation of a two-wave structure for the [221] monocrystal. We also analyzed the dislocation structure induced by the shock compression along these two crystal orientations. The topology of this structure compare...

Dislocation mechanics of copper and iron in high rate deformation tests

Different dislocation processes are shown to be operative under high rate loading by impact-induced shock tests as compared with shockless isentropic compression experiments ICEs . Under shock loading, the plastic deformation rate dependence of the flow stress of copper is attributed to dislocation generation at the propagating shock front, while in shockless ICEs, the rate dependence is attrib...

Microscale Laser Peen Forming of Single Crystal: Dynamic Deformation and Anisotropy

Microscale laser peen-forming (μLPF) is an innovative process in which compressive residual stress is induced into the treated surface to improve fatigue life of the micro scale metallic parts and meanwhile shape the parts with a controlled bending deformation. In this work, dynamic deformation in μLPF of single crystal aluminum is investigated. A finite element model based on meso scale crysta...

Effect of Fe additive on plastic deformation for crush-boxes with closed-cell metal foams, Part I: Al-composite foam compression response

AbstractIn this paper, we investigate effect of Fe–intermetallic compounds on plastic deformation of closed-cell composite Aluminum Foam as filler of thin-walled tubes. However, deformation of the Aluminum foam-filled thin-walled tubes as crushed-box will be presented in Part (II). Composite foams of AlSi7SiC3 and AlSi7SiC3-(Fe) as closed cell were synthesized by powder metallurgy foaming metho...
